The making · scroll to fire it
Stoneware is wedged to drive out the air, then pulled up on the wheel. Raw clay is soft, grey and damp, and about twelve percent larger than it will end up.
Room temperature · 1 day
Dried bone-dry for a week, then fired to 960°C. The clay turns pale and porous: strong enough to handle, thirsty enough to take glaze.
960°C · 10 hours
Dipped in a slurry of ash, feldspar and iron. Wet glaze looks like chalk. The colour you chose is hiding in there.
Dipped · 3 seconds
Cone 10 in reduction. Glass forms, colour wakes, and the piece shrinks to its final size. We open the kiln two days later.
1,260°C · 14 hours
The 3D view needs WebGL. The four stages are described alongside.
Notes from the studio

Every piece is one of a kind, and the next firing is only two weeks away.
